Police Officer Takes His Own Life On Duty
NAPOLEON, Ohio (Media Defiance) – A City of Napoleon Policeman has allegedly committed suicide while on duty Saturday night.
Chief of Police, Edward Legg said his officers went to check on the patrolman around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. They found the officer dead in his patrol car with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound, Legg said.
Legg stated Napoleon has turned the investigation over to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s office.
Chief Legg asked for privacy for the family and his department.
“My department would ask that the public and press give the family and my department space to deal with this situation in this very difficult time,” Legg said. “We have a lot of things to do and the investigation continues. I would appreciate it if we were given that time and space to handle these things.”
The Police officer’s name has not been released.
Media Defiance has contacted the Napoleon Police Department which refused to give any additional information and referred us to the City’s Facebook page.
While our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, we must not forget the nature of this tragedy. Police are public servants and the public has every right to know the facts. A public employee has died while performing his public duties and the public does not even know his name. Chief Edward Legg shows audacity when asking that his police department be given privacy.
Acting with such secrecy only fuels suspicion. Considering our experience with corruption in the area, questioning the official story is understandable.
